Child & Adolescent
Therapy
Child and adolescent therapy offers a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate space in which young people can explore difficulties and build healthier ways of coping. Through regular one-to-one sessions, I use evidence-based and evidence-informed psychological interventions to help children and adolescents reduce distress, improve functioning, and develop effective emotional and behavioural coping strategies.
Depending on the young person's age, developmental stage, and presenting needs, sessions typically last between 30 and 50 minutes. I use age-appropriate methods such as creative play, role-play, drawing and art-based activities, and guided imagery, alongside structured therapeutic techniques where appropriate. These approaches can help children and adolescents communicate feelings, thoughts, and concerns in ways that feel natural and manageable.
Treatment is always tailored to the individual child or adolescent and may focus on emotional regulation, behaviour, anxiety management, problem-solving, self-esteem, social functioning, and adjustment to life stressors. Where clinically indicated, I also work collaboratively with parents/guardians to support consistent responses at home and to reinforce therapeutic progress across settings (e.g., family, school, and social environments).
When to Seek Support
Parents and guardians may seek support when they are concerned that a child's emotions, behaviour, concentration, or coping are causing distress or affecting functioning at home, at school, or in relationships. Therapy can also be helpful when a child or adolescent is struggling to adjust to significant life events or developmental transitions.
Common reasons families seek support include:
- Bullying
- Anxiety difficulties (including separation anxiety, school-related anxiety, excessive worries, and panic symptoms)
- School avoidance / school refusal and attendance-related distress
- Exam stress and performance anxiety
- Low mood / depressive symptoms (including withdrawal, sadness, loss of interest, and reduced motivation)
- Emotional dysregulation and behavioural difficulties (including anger outbursts, oppositional behaviour, and disruptive behaviour)
- Neurodevelopmental-related difficulties (e.g., attention/concentration difficulties, ADHD- or autism-related emotional/behavioural challenges, parent guidance, and school collaboration)
- Adjustment difficulties following life changes (e.g., parental separation/divorce, relocation, school transition, new sibling)
- Self-harm / suicidal thoughts or behaviours (with risk assessment, safety planning, and collaboration/referral to specialist services where needed)
What to Expect
The therapeutic process usually begins with an initial consultation with the parent(s)/guardian(s). This appointment allows me to understand the presenting concerns, clarify the nature and context of the difficulties, and gather relevant developmental, family, and school history. It also provides an opportunity to discuss treatment goals and whether individual therapy is the most appropriate next step.
Before therapy begins, I explain the therapeutic framework, including the proposed approach, the expected involvement of parents/guardians, confidentiality and its limits (including safeguarding and risk-related exceptions), and consent procedures in line with applicable legal and ethical requirements. The young person's assent/consent is also considered in a developmentally appropriate manner.
If individual therapy is indicated, sessions typically take place once per week. There is no predetermined number of sessions; the duration of therapy is tailored to the child or adolescent's presenting difficulties, treatment goals, progress over time, and psychological, emotional, and developmental needs. Progress is reviewed regularly and the treatment plan is adjusted accordingly.
Sessions are typically offered on a weekly basis at one of my offices in Limassol or Paphos. Online sessions are also available to residents of Cyprus only.
